Tim Barnes

Student-at-Law

Tim Barnes

Tim Barnes joins Advocate Law after 15 years working in the technology sector, including 8 years running a business as an Information Technology Consultant.

Tim attended the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. In his final year of law school, Tim went to North Battleford, Saskatchewan, to participate in a new, experiential learning program in partnership with Legal Aid Saskatchewan. Under the supervision of Legal Aid Battlefords' Executive Director, Jonathan Bodvarson, Tim acquired extensive experience in criminal law and justice issues in a short period of time. Over the course of his four months with Legal Aid, Tim spent the majority of his time in court, gaining valuable experience in effective advocacy and working with clients from diverse backgrounds.

Prior to attending law school, Tim obtained a Bachelor of Computer Information Systems from Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, where he was recognized three times for achieving the Dean's Honour Roll by completing a full semester of studies and maintaining a minimum average GPA of 3.5/4.0. He is also a certified computer technician and a certified IT Project Manager. He ran a successful IT Consulting business in Calgary until the pandemic hit in 2020. Realizing it was time for a change, he applied for law school.

His combination of technical expertise and business experience enables him to present a friendly face to clients, and he can effectively understand complex evidence in an increasingly digital world. Tim believes in holding the Crown accountable when they accuse someone of a crime. As a Student-at-Law, Tim is currently working towards achieving full status with the Law Society of Alberta. He is expecting to be called to the bar in the summer of 2026. He is directly supervised by Mr. Collard when handling your criminal matters.

Tim was born in Ontario and raised in a small logging town called Chapleau. He moved to Alberta in 2013 to pursue his higher education and work opportunities. He is a member of We'koqma'q First Nation, a Mi'kmaq band in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia or Unama'kik in the Mi'kmaw language. In his spare time, Tim loves exploring the Rocky Mountain wilderness,  fishing, camping, playing chess, and golfing.
