Randann Sargent is an ex-police officer who, through his life experience, transitioned into becoming an advocate for the criminally accused. He has been on all sides of the law and understands firsthand the process, its impact on people, and the critical importance of fearlessly defending one's rights and the rule of law. Every person matters. Every case matters.
Randann graduated with distinction from the University of Calgary with an undergraduate degree in law and society. He also minored in political science, sociology, and philosophy. His study of legal theory, crime and punishment, systems of government, and history has instilled Randann with a sophisticated understanding of the justice system. His experiences and education have ingrained in him a firm perspective on criminal defence lawyers' central role in our society.
Based on his superior academic performance during his undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary, Randann was invited to work alongside a criminal appellate lawyer. There, he researched complex legal issues involving homicides, drug trafficking, search warrants, identity, and sentencing principles—all before being admitted into law school.
Following his undergraduate studies, Randann continued to attend the University of Calgary, where he earned his Juris Doctorate degree. Randann focused his studies on advanced criminal law and procedure in law school. He also volunteered with the student pro-bono legal clinic, held the position of Treasurer with the law school's student publication, and wrote extensively on criminal law principles. Simultaneous to his legal education studies, Randann worked on cases with Advocate Law until he graduated and joined the firm full-time.
Since joining Advocate Law, Randann has assisted people charged with a wide array of offences, including assault, theft, robbery, impaired driving, drug trafficking, and homicides. He has also written extensive arguments challenging the legality of search warrants in high-level drug trafficking cases and false confessions. In addition to his criminal law experience, Randann specializes in defending immediate roadside suspensions ("IRS"). He has completed approximately 200 IRS appeals, boasting a success rate well above the provincial average.
Randann is currently a Student-At-Law and is scheduled to complete his articles in May 2025.
