Darren Tootoosis obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies, with a minor in Sociology from the University of Alberta in 2017. Darren graduated from the University of Alberta law program in 2021, completed his articles with a criminal focus, and was called to the bar in 2022. While in law school, much of his focus has been on criminal law and advocacy. While in law school, Darren worked with experienced defence lawyers at Advocate Law and has accumulated an impressive amount of time in court and researching issues related to charter-protected rights.
Before returning to school for a law degree, Darren gained valuable experience working in corrections. He acquired twelve years of experience in counselling, risk assessment, correctional program delivery, and management. Darren left his career with Correction Services of Canada to effect change by writing Gladue Reports for Indigenous offenders involved in the justice system. This opportunity provided significant experience in interviewing people in challenging circumstances and gaining a further appreciation for the factors that can lead to people running into trouble with the justice system.
Darren’s experience and unique insight into criminal law have earned him a reputation as an adept advocate. Darren is based in our Red Deer office and is able to defend clients throughout Central Alberta.
